The majority of the CSC’s awards are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships provide talented and motivated individuals with the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in their given sector, in order to contribute to sustainable development in their home countries. These awards are offered under six development themes:

Science and technology for development
Strengthening health systems and capacity
Promoting global prosperity
Strengthening global peace, security and governance
Strengthening resilience and response to crises
Access, inclusion and opportunity

The CSC also offers a small number of Scholarships for PhD study for candidates from High Income countries which are funded by the Department for Education (DfE).
